Although I have worked in this field for 10 years, my experience with multiracial, multilingual, and multicultural world as an early childhood professional has been somewhat limited. The vast majority of the families that have been enrolled in my program have been two-income earner, 30 to 40-year-old, college degree holding, English speaking parents. This class and this program has helped me to see three important factors. First, there is a great deal of diversity among the families and their family cultures of the families in my program that should be respected and acknowledged. Secondly, there are many areas and aspects of diversity that the students and I can explore and be educated on to prepare us to be citizens that take a stand for social equality and justice. It is never too early and no child is too young to gain an understanding of issues in diversity and equity. My most passionate hope is that I continue to be a learner and leader in encouraging children and their families to recognize diversity, treat others with respect regardless of their differences from you, and stand up for others who are being treated unfairly.
I truly appreciate my colleagues in this course and throughout this program for being transparent in their thoughts and ideas related to diversity. This can be a hard topic to discuss as we find ourselves trying to be so careful with our words. I really feel that this has been a safe place (even on the world wide web) to voice our opinions on these matters, share our experiences, and help each other gain insight into how others view our various topics of discussion. I hope that all of my colleagues stay encouraged to continue see this educational journey through to its end but to also to continue to work with young children and their families to build a world that displays love, kindness, peace and equality with all men and women. As early childhood professionals we play such an important part in shaping the youngest minds. Thank you all of helping me do my work in this field.
